Ce château est un château du secteur nord Luberon - monts de Vaucluse. On date son origine au XIIIème siècle. Complété de divers éléments aux XVI et XVIIème siècles, il est actuellement en ruine.
Le château d'Oppède est situé au sommet d'une élévation qui surplombe le vieux village de la commune d'Oppède, village que l'on appèle Oppède-le-vieux. Bien que le lieu soit privé, on accède au château par une lente assention par delà les ruelles caladées du vieux village.
Son occupant le plus célèbre fut le Baron Jean Meynier d'Oppède. Celui joua un rôle important dans les guerre de religion du XVIème siècle en Luberon, nottament en 1545 pour avoir mené, sur ordre du parlement d'Aix, le massacre des vaudois de Mérindol et Cabrières
