Coustellet in Luberon, between Maubec, Cabrières d'Avignon, Robion and Oppède

Coustellet, Maubec, Luberon

Coustellet is a recent amalgamation of several municipalities in the heart of the northern valley of Luberon, a crossroads village between the road from Robion to Gordes, the county road D2, and from Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (or Avignon) to Apt, the former national 100 which became the country road D900.

Totally missing from Cassini maps (only "Maubec" appears, offset from the current position of the village), one can find traces of the village on maps from the early nineteenth century. This is called then "Le Coustellet", a hamlet of three houses in Cabrières area. There are also a few scattered buildings, including a former stagecoach relay where now stands "And Why Not? By John ", probably the oldest building of Coustellet in Maubec.

Its development was made over several villages, mainly Maubec, with among others the installation of a large distillery visible from far away, and Cabrières d’Avignon with its recent high school, the only one in this sector, and finally Robion and Oppède to a much lesser extent. Adding Oppède, with its recycling center, is relatively recent.

Coustellet had its own SNCF train station during the last century. The track was completely abandoned and most of it converted into a bike path that currently provides access to Cavaillon or Apt. In addition, a path to Saint Jacques de Compostela crosses it from east to west in Maubec, more or less at the old railway level.

Coustellet is best known for its markets, including the one on Sunday morning which takes place from May to November and for which Peter Mayle wrote, in his book "A Year in Provence," that it was the Luberon celebrities’ point of rendez-vous.
