Before silkworms farms develop around Nimes, fabrics used Provence were imported from India and generally arrived by boats in the port of Marseille.
Today, Provencal fabrics are used to make shawls, clothing, scarves, tablecloths and many other products. If the reasons these tissues are constantly changing, they are often drawn from drawings made by artcraftmen more than 200 years.
In Tarascon, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, a museum of Provencal fabric has been established since 1988 on the premises of the company "Souleiado", known worldwide. It represents the history of fabric printing in Provence. This museum has rare "piqués", colorful Indians, tarditional provençal costume and many other treasures (including 40,000 printing plates of the XVIIIth century).
