Une des portes du haut Goult, Luberon

At the top of the village of Goult you will find the former stronghold of the town. In this old part, which is sometimes called the Castellas, many fortifications are still visible. These old harrow doors have undergone several revisions, whole portions of the old wall acting as ramparts, murderous, or towers including the castle which dates from the twelfth century. The previous castle, now private, was built by local lords in the thirteenth century. The castle of Goult will subsequently be amended several times, including in the XIV century (large guardroom) and XVII century (grand staircase).

The highest old village of Goult was built at the top for obvious observations amplitude reasons (and thus preventing a possible attack), but also to better dominate the possible attackers who have dared to climb up there.

It was also a good site to enjoy Nature, like sunshine, and later to feed wind mill built near the mill of Jerusalem restored identically at the end of the last century for the delight of visitors.

These fortifications were surrounded by ditches, but the modernization of the place strongly made them disappear. The northern part of Castellas Goult was dug partly into the rock.

We sometimes find houses for sale in the old part of the village of Goult. Whether they are parts of the central island or are contiguous to the remains of the ancient fortification, it is very likely that Rosier agency in Gordes have them in their portfolio!
