Jean Giono, writer and screenwriter, was born in Manosque in 1895.
On the sidelines of all contemporary literary trends, Jean Giono's witness and narrator of rural Provence, both wonderful and absolute realism, where the verb is natural and authentic Provencal. One of his first books, "Regain" was adapted to film.

His pacifism earned him some trouble during the war but did not prevent him from writing the "Travel Carriage" and "Two riders of the storm", which marked a turning point in his inspiration. During the war, his stories are darker and psychological.
After setting aside at the end of the war, in 1951 appears "The Horseman on the Roof," successfully adapted to the screen in 1995 by Jean Paul Rappeneau.
In the years that followed, he received numerous awards, including the Literary Prize of the Prince Pierre of Monaco, he was elected to the Académie Goncourt. He ended his days in the city where he was born, Manosque.
