Le village perché de Murs

The charming village of Murs, nestled on a hillside, 500 m above sea level, is located 8 km east of Gordes, 4 km from Joucas, and 17 km of  the town of Apt . It is a traditional provençal village, with its little cobbled lanes climbing up to the castle.

Its castle was built between the XIIth and the XVIth centuries. However, in the XVIIIth century, the family Astouaud did not come anymore in Murs.  After the Revolution, the castle was totally abandoned, leaving the animals to freely drink from the well.

In the XIXth century , Bruno Vayson began restoring the castle. His descendants still occupy the castle which can not be visited. The most interesting element is the dungeon with its Gothic chapel and its audience of justice.

The church of Saint-Loup in Murs is built at the end of the XIIth century in Roman style. The treasure of the church consists of a bust of the saint containing relics of St. Loup , Saint Lambert and Saint Andrew the Apostle, a censer of the XVIIIth century and a silver processional cross carved on a wooden core of the XVIth century. On an arch of the church, there is a sculpture of an eagle bicephalous the origin of which is unknown.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Salut was built in 1625 below the village to replace an old chapel dedicated to St. Daniel. Built by Jean Astouaud , the chapel of Our Lady is the stately chapel where are buried local lords. Bruno Vayson Mayor of Murs in the XIXth century, is buried there.

Every year , during the "Ascension" , a procession goes from the village to the chapel where Mass is said at the end of which the little bell of the chapel named Clara Maria Adela is rung.

Murs in Luberon is rich of what is called a small heritage:  multiple wells, laundries ( used by washerwomen
until the mid- twentieth century) and fountains with evocative names such as the " fountain of the foxes " or " the fountain of the sheep", crosses such as the cross of Plantades or cross of the southern plains, dry stone huts or Bories used as shelters by sheperds. All these elements have been identified by the Regional Natural Park of Luberon.

The municipality also includes retaining walls for agricultural terraces, garden walls and dry stone walls hutches and other amenities ( hives , vines , sources , etc. . ) also in dry stone .
