The great poet of the langue d'oc, Frédéric Mistral (1830 - 1914) was born in Maillane into a wealthy family and grew up in Mas du Juge, an area of 25 hectares, between Maillane and Saint Remy. He studied at Avignon, in particular the Royal College of Avignon, in the street that now bears his name.
After a degree in Law in Aix en Provence, he became the herald of the ancient culture of Provence and Provencal "first literary language of civilized Europe."


With the poet Joseph Roumanille Mistral orchestra Renewal langue d'oc. Accompanied by five other poets, they founded in 1854 in Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne (Vaucluse) Félibrige association that promotes the use of the langue d'oc. Today, this cultural organization is still active in Provence.
Epic poems written in langue d'oc Mistral, novels in verse. His most famous work is Mirèio (Mireille), published in 1859 and which earned him the Nobel Prize in 1904. Charles Gounod will make an opera. His friends, Lamartine and Daudet, contribute to the success of public Mistral praising his works in their own creations.


Mistral then wrote "Lou Tresor dóu Felibrige" the most comprehensive dictionary of the langue d'oc.
Frederic Mistral museum Maillane is firstly his house where he lived with his wife. Mistral bequeathed after his death and that of his wife in the town of Maillane with everything in it. The house was listed monument and preserved state.
