The Château de Grignan is the largest Renaissance palace in the South East of France.
This site Grignan was originally a farm Gallo-Roman. It was fortified in the 10th century by the local aristocracy. In the 12th century, the Adhemar family took the lordship of Castle.
In the 13th century, the chapel of Saint-Romain was built for the castle and an extension of the square tower.
In 1669, the Lord Adhemar de Monteil married Francoise de Sevigne who became Countess of Grignan. She is the daughter of Madame Sevigne who stayed at the castle and spoke of it in her books.
Destroyed and ransacked during the Revolution, the castle is owned now by the Department of Drôme.
